With Hemp products under some serious scrutiny these days, it’s important for anyone considering a purchase to look for quality safe products. It is important to make sure that the Hemp gummy bears you are chewing actually have cannabidiol in them and that you aren’t being swindled. It is also important to know what other remnants of the cannabis plant may be hiding within your purchase, such as THC. What are Most Drug Tests Looking For?
First, most drug tests are not looking for CBD. It is a non-psychoactive compound found in abundance in the flower of hemp plants, just like THC is found in abundance in the flower of medical and recreational cannabis flowers. But, unlike THC, Hemp does not impair judgement and make you feel what so many people refer to as “high.” Like alcohol, employers are concerned that THC will prevent employees from being able to perform safely and efficiently while at work and so commission drug testing for THC.
Why Even Worry About Failing a Hemp Drug Test?
So then, what is the concern with CBD? If employers are not testing for CBD, why then should anyone worry about failing a Hemp drug test? The only reason why anyone needs to worry about failing a drug test after buying a Hemp product is that there may also be enough THC in the product that the test returns a positive for THC. It has happened. Truck drivers and people in other professions will often be required to take random drug tests. If a truck driver, as an example, has stopped in a state that has legalized adult-use cannabis and walked into a dispensary to purchase only a Hemp tincture or Hemp edible, thinking it would only have Hemp in it, that was their mistake.
Dispensaries in states like California, Washington, Colorado, Nevada or Massachusetts, where adult-use marijauna has been legalized for purchase by anyone 21 years of age or older, grow indoor cannabis plants full of THC and CBD. Those plants are where they get the ingredients for all of their products. It is not unreasonable for those companies to think they could extract Hemp from their plants just like they could from hemp plants. However, those dispensaries are not concerned about other cannabinoids making their way into the product they are labeling as being a Hemp product, because it is not even illegal by their state for them to sell something full of THC within their state.
Full Spectrum CBD
Dispensaries tend to sell what is referred to as full spectrum Hemp products, which is their way of saying that while Hemp is the primary constituent of the gummies, tinctures or whatever they are selling, it also contains other cannabinoids like THC as well. If anyone uses this product, they very well may have enough THC in their system for the next month after using it to fail a drug test. There may not be enough THC in the product for that person to ever even feel any sort of high feeling, but it still may be enough to cause a fail on a test.
Hemp Companies Cutting Corners
Beyond adult-use dispensaries, many Hemp companies selling products made with Hemp extracted from hemp plants have cut corners and do not conduct third party lab testing on their products to provide accurate labeling. This is an unacceptable business practice. All companies selling any sort of product should provide labels on their packaging accurately depicting what their customer will be consuming. People want to know what they are putting in their bodies and they should. Any company in the Hemp industry that cuts corners like this are conducting the worst sort of business practices.
Federally Legal Hemp
So, how can you know for sure whether or not there is THC in the product you are purchasing? First, the 2018 Farm Bill included provisions from the Hemp Farming Act that federally legalized the growing, cultivation and sale of hemp with less than a .3% THC concentration. So, after many decades of prohibition, hemp is now legal nationwide and interstate commerce is permitted. .3% THC represents such a small amount of the compound that any product produced from these plants should not cause anyone to fail a drug test. The FDA is requiring that all plants be tested to ensure the proper THC concentration and that cultivators harvest the plants in quick time after tests are conducted.
Hemp Lab Testing
Beyond proper hemp plants being used in the extraction process of CBD, many companies (not enough) are taking yet another step by independently having their Hemp products tested again before they are sold to the public. These tests are being conducted by a third party lab to help make the customer feel confident that no bias influenced the testing process. Those labs then provide what is called a certificate of analysis that can be provided to customers accurately showing how much Hemp is in the product and how much of any other cannabinoid is present as well.
ISO 17025 Accreditation
Taking lab testing yet another step further, not all labs are made equal. In the lab testing world, and labs are asked to test for all sorts of things in all kinds of products, there are levels of accreditation showing just how far that lab has gone to ensure their testing is accurate. The very top tier for a lab is called ISO 17025 accreditation.
