Managing the Stresses of Working for Yourself

There are pros and cons to all kinds of business. Working in the freelance industry, as an example, can be incredibly empowering: you create your own hours, control your own schedule, and are essentially your own boss! Being able to craft your work life around your home and social life is a blessing, but freelancing isn’t always all fun and games.

With being your own boss comes extreme responsibility and self-discipline that can often result in feeling burnt out. When working for yourself, the stress is different than when you are employed but not necessarily better or worse. Learning to manage the stresses that it brings is crucial to keeping yourself feeling balanced and refreshed.

When we work from home, getting outside becomes less common than you’d think. The more you get wrapped up in work, the less you leave your home office. Even if you’re someone who doesn’t enjoy getting out, doing so once in a while is crucial to your mental health.

Getting outside for some fresh air occasionally when you work from home is really important to stay balanced and deal with anxiety.

The longer we push ourselves without a break, the more difficult it becomes to perform well. Because of this, taking time to step outside and enjoy the fresh air can give us the motivation we need to finish everything on our to-do lists. You don’t have to plan a several-mile hike, but even just a stroll around your neighborhood can give your mind the rejuvenation it needs. The next time you find yourself working for hours on end, ask yourself the last time you’ve soaked up some sun.

Be Social

Along with giving yourself some outdoor time, finding time to socialize with someone other than your computer can do wonders for your mind and body. Isolating yourself is never healthy, but it becomes easier than ever when you freelance.

Make sure to create time in your schedule for you to be social. This can be anything from meeting your best friend for a drink to calling your mom for a quick chat. Whatever your version of socializing is, having face-to-face time with someone can grant you the stimulation you deserve. When we continuously isolate ourselves from those who make us happy, the bliss molecules our bodies need to function positively become sparse, leaving us feeling drained and alone. So, don’t forget to stay in contact with those that make you feel your best, otherwise, producing your best work will be nearly impossible.

Be Kind to Yourself

Most importantly, be kind to yourself. We place a lot of pressure on ourselves as freelancers to balance not only our personal lives but our works lives, too. Without the traditional, strict structure that a 9-5 job brings, it can be difficult to gain your footing in this industry. Because of that, be patient. Crafting your freelance career does not happen overnight!

Being kind to yourself means taking care of you on top of the work you do. You cannot neglect your own health and well-being if you want to produce your ideal work. Taking care of yourself is the best way to manage the day-to-day stresses that freelance may bring. If you’re content, everything else becomes easier, too.

Take Some Time Off

Don’t forget to take some time off and give your mind and body the chance to relax and recharge. The freelance industry is a competitive one, but managing the stressors that it brings can be a walk in the park if you let it. Take care of yourself and your best work will follow.
